Lost in Translation brings together works by Joey Chin, Maëlle Gross and Kevin Hunt, the works on show are the result of the artists' stay in Athens during June-July 2016. 

Something feels slightly off. Something has failed to be communicated. Intentions have not quite been carried through. This sense of feeling lost in one's current situation, one of the underlying themes in the works presented, has also led to the exhibition title, borrowed from the 2003 Sofia Coppola film. That and ideas of translation and mistranslation that are recurring in the artists’ current practices. 

In the case of the three resident artists the lost-in-translation theme, especially in its post-Coppola amplified rendition is not simply an – admittedly clichéd – response to works compelled by travel experiences and attempts to immerse one’s self in a different environment and culture in what is essentially a very short period of time. That is not to say that the artists have not explored this direction. On the contrary, they have engaged with the city and its culture in ways that were determined and focused, also encouraged by the strong focus Snehta places on the engagement with Athens. But, they have also done more than that; Instead of hastily appropriating this sense of displacement, they have used it as a tool to address and explore concerns central to their respective practices, including the relationship between image and object, fact and fiction, language and culture all the while drawing attention to the constant search for meaning; in words, in works, in objects and in each other. 

 

Biographies

Kevin Hunt (b. 1983) lives and works in Liverpool as an artist and curator having gained a BA in Fine Art from the North Wales School of Art and Design in 2005. Recent exhibitions include things we didn’t have before, Pump House Gallery, London; SCOUSE HOUSE (Volume’s I & II) at Syson, Nottingham and during NORTH Festival, Warrington; Finite Project Altered When Open, David Dale Gallery, Glasgow. Kevin was director of The Royal Standard  between 2007 and 2011 and currently co-curates MODEL, an experimental, research based platform for artist-led activity, also in Liverpool. More recently he curated good things come… a group exhibition featuring sculpture by 17 artists tackling scale and time at The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art, Plymouth.

 

Joey Chin (b.1986) is a writer and visual poet from Singapore. She holds an MFA from the City University of Hong Kong. Her scholarly, creative and mixed language works in Chinese, German, Malay and English have been featured internationally including among others QLRS and Writing the City (Singapore), The Transnational, Hayden’s Ferry Review, Drunken Boat, the Anthropology and Humanism Journal (US), The Missing Slate (Pakistan), Ma La Journal (China). Forthcoming publications include This Bridge Called Language (US) and Balik Kampung III (Singapore).

Maëlle Gross was born and raised in Switzerland. She graduated with honours from the Geneva University of Art and Design with a BA in Fine Art and went on to study at Goldsmiths, London from where she received an MFA in 2015. Working mostly in video, photography and installation, Gross’s practice oscillates between video art and documentary often intermingling fact and fiction. With a focus on social conditions her works link the particular and the everyday to the timeless and the universal. Recent exhibitions included Les Rencontres Internationales at La Gaïté Lyrique, Paris, The Tunis international contemporary feminist art festival also she also recently shown her  video “Strike a pose” at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin.

 

Irini Bachlitzanaki was born in Athens, Greece in 1984. She studied History of Art at University College London (UCL) and Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. She has participated in group exhibitions in Greece and abroad and in October 2015 she presented her first solo exhibition at Elika Gallery, Athens. In addition to her work as an artist, she also works as a curator. She lives and works in Athens.

Kevin Hunt (1983). Ζεί και εργάζεται στο Λίβερπουλ ως εικαστικός καλλιτέχνης και επιμελητής. Είναι απόφοιτος του North Wales School of Art and Design, 2005, με BA σε Fine Art. Πρόσφατες εκθέσεις του είναι η hings we didn’t have before, Pump House Gallery, Λονδίνο; SCOUSE HOUSE (Volume’s I & II) στο Syson, Νότιγχαμ και κατά τη διάρκεια του NORTH Festival, Warrington; Finite Project Altered When Open, David Dale Gallery, Γλασκώβη. Ο Kevin υπήρξε διευθυντής του The Royal Standard μεταξύ 2007 και 2011 και αυτή τη στιγμή κάνει συνεπιμέλεια στο MODEL, μία πλατφόρμα που εστιάζει στην έρευνα και τον πειραματισμό με θέμα την artist-led δραστηριότητα του Λίβερπουλ. Πολύ πρόσφατα επιμελήθηκε την ομαδική έκθεση, good things come 17 καλλιτεχνών που ασχολούνται με το θέμα των διαστάσεων και του χρόνου στην The Gallery στο Plymouth College of Art, Πλίμουθ.

 

Η Joey Chin (1986) είναι συγγραφέας και visual poet απο τη Σιγκαπούρη. Έχει λάβει το MFA της απο το City University του Hong Kong. Η ακαδημαϊκή δημιουργική και μικτή γλωσσικά δουλειά της στα Κινέζικα, Γερμανικά, Μαλαισιανά και Αγγλικά έχουν παρουσιαστεί παγκοσμίως, όπως στα QLRS and Writing the City (Σιγκαπούρη), The Transnational, Hayden’s Ferry Review, Drunken Boat, the Anthropology και Humanism Journal (ΗΠΑ), The Missing Slate (Πακιστάν), Ma La Journal (Κίνα). * Το έργο της που παρουσιάζει στο Snehta με τίτλο: “Calling the Current Conversation” έχει υλοποιηθεί με την οικονομική υποστήριξη του National Arts Council (Singapore) και τη συνεργασία της καλλιτέχνιδας με τον Ρωμανό Κουτεδάκη (εικόνες). Βοήθεια και συμβουλές της έδωσαν επίσης η επιμελήτρια και καλλιτέχνης Ειρήνη Μπαχλιτζανάκη, ο Αύγουστος Βεϊνόγλου και Becky Campbell του SNEHTA Residency. Επίσης συνεργάστηκε με την Μαριάννα Ασημακοπούλου, τους Faribah και Hassan απο το κέντρο ημέρας Βαβέλ και τον Θεόφιλο Παπαδόπουλο. 

 

Η Maëlle Gross γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στην Ελβετία. Αποφοίτησε με τ’επαίνου απο το Geneva University of Art and Design (BA σε Fine Art) και στη συνέχεια σπούδασε στο Goldsmiths του Λονδίνου όπου το 2015 έλαβε MFΑ. Εργάζεται κυρίως σε βίντεο, φωτογραφία και εγκαταστάσεις. Η πρόσφατη πρακτική της κυμαίνεται μεταξύ video art και ντοκιμαντέρ όπου ο μύθος και πραγματικότητα συμπλέκονται. Με ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για τα κοινωνικά ζητήματα συνδέει το μερικό και το καθημερινό με το διαχρονικό και το οικουμενικό. Έχει συμμετάσχει στις εκθέσεις; Les Rencontres Internationales at La Gaïté Lyrique, Παρίσι, στο Tunis international contemporary feminist art festival και πρόσφατα παρουσίασε το βίντεό της “Strike a pose” στο the Haus der Kulturen der Welt στο Βερολίνο.

Η Ειρήνη Μπχαλιτζανάκη γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1984. Σπούδασε Ιστορία της τέχνης στο University College London (UCL) και Καλές Τέχνες στο Saint Martins College of Art and Design και στο Chelsea College of Art and Design του Λονδίνου. Έχει συμμετάσχει σε ομαδικές εκθέσεις στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό και τον Οκτώβριο του 2015 είχε στην γκαλερι Έλικα την πρώτη της ατομική έκθεση. Παράλληλα με την καλλιτεχνική της δραστηριότητα εργάζεται και ως επιμελήτρια. Ζει και εργάζεται στην Αθήνα.
