Ο τίτλος προκύπτει από ένα κοινό μορφολογικό στοιχείο στα έργα των δύο καλλιτεχνών, τις οργανικές συστραμμένες φόρμες οι οποίες δημιουργούν κλειστά σχήματα που έχουν την τάση να επιστρέφουν στον εαυτό τους. Αντανακλά ωστόσο και την θεματική αναφορά ορισμένων έργων σε μυθολογικές μορφές και αρχετυπικά σύμβολα (Σφίγγα, φίδι). Τα έργα τους αναπαριστούν συμπλέγματα αποτελούμενα από αποσπασματικές συνδέσεις σωμάτων και οπτικούς αναγραμματισμούς. Ορίζοντας μια φετιχιστική σχέση με αυτό, η αναπαράσταση του ανθρωπίνου σώματος - όπου αυτό βρίσκεται - απεικονίζεται σε κατάσταση ερωτικής έκστασης, παραμένοντας ωστόσο ατελές και παραμορφωμένο, σαν να έχει συλληφθεί σε μια φάση παύσης της μεταμόρφωσης και ένωσης του με κάτι τερατώδες η ζωώδες. Ένα περαιτέρω έναυσμα ανίχνευσης των έργων τους είναι οι τίτλοι που συνδράμουν μυθοπλαστικά δημιουργώντας ένα ψυχολογικό τόπο και μια διάθεση διερώτησης για την προέλευση και επιλογή των συμβόλων που χρησιμοποιούνται. Σύντομα βιογραφικά: Ο Νίκος Μάντζιος γεννήθηκε το 1974 στην Αθήνα. Σπούδασε ζωγραφική στην Ανώτατη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών της Αθήνας με καθηγητή τον Χρόνη Μπότσογλου (1993-8) και έκανε μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στο Edinburgh College of Art από όπου αποφοίτησε το 2008. Έχει κάνει ατομικές εκθέσεις στο Εδιμβούργο (Totalkunst project space), στη Γλασκόβη (WASPS), και στο Sheffield (Bloc Projects). Ο Βρετανός καλλιτέχνης Joseph Stokes γεννήθηκε στο Μπέρμιγχαμ το 1964. Ως γλύπτης και ζωγράφος χρησιμοποιεί κυρίως παραδοσιακά υλικά όπως μάρμαρο, ξύλο, λάδι σε καμβά και γραφίτη. Σπούδασε σχέδιο και ζωγραφική (ΜΑ) στο City & Guilds Art School στο Λονδίνο (2002-2003) και γλυπτική (ΒΑ) στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Γουόλβερχαμπτον (1998-2001). Ολοκλήρωσε επίσης σπουδές στην αναπαραστατική γλυπτική στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Στάφορντ και παραδοσιακές τεχνικές γλυπτικής στο City & Guilds Art School στο Λονδίνο. The title stems from a common morphological element evident in the works of both artists: the organic twisted forms in their works form closed shapes which have the tendency to come back within their own entity. This tendency also reflects the thematic references of the works to ancient mythological forms and archetypal symbols. (sphinx, snake). The works of Mantzios and Stokes represent clusters which consist of fragmentary body connections and visual anagrams. By defining a fetishistic relationship through such connections, the human body’s representation - wherever it may be - is depicted in a state of erotic ecstasy. Yet it remains incomplete and distorted, as captured continuously in a phase of ceasing its transformation and becoming united with something monstrous or animal-like. A further trigger regarding the works is the titles themselves; they seem to support the fiction by inserting within the works both a psychological space and a mood of questioning regarding the origin and choice of the symbols within. Short bios: Nikos Mantzios was born in Athens in 1974. He studied at Athens School of Fine Arts (1993-8) and Edinburgh College of Art (graduated in 2008). He has had solo exhibitions in Edinburgh (Totalkunst project space), Glasgow (WASPS) and Sheffield (Bloc Projects). Joseph Stokes is an English artist Born in Birmingham 1964. He is both a sculptor and a painter, working in traditional materials such as marble, wood, oil paint and graphite. He studied Fine Art (MA) at The City & Guilds of London Art School 2002-2003 and Fine Art Sculpture (BA) at The University of Wolverhampton 1998-2001. He also studied figurative sculpture at Stafford University, as well as historical stone carving at The City & Guilds of London Fine Art School.
